As the world becomes flat, we must shift the focus from teaching to learning, from teachers being the conduit of knowledge to students constructing and sharing their own knowledge. Through the power of the connected web, students can begin to learn how to create their own learning networks by working in global student collaborative projects. Join us as we look at how to develop and nurture global contacts, the basic web tools that make this all possible and look at three specific examples of students working together across the globe.

Hear about experiences with second and third graders of varied ability levels who are learning to study using a question and answer format. Use the slideshow templates provided to extend content area studies. Once the questions are prepared, the students build the game in the computer lab, where they learn to use a template, find and replace, check spelling, and program slides. Classroom teachers can use the slideshow templates provided to extend content area studies. Templates work with MS Office, MACOffice and Open Office. Users can be beginners or advanced, as the templates have already been mapped by the original designers. When teachers write the game questions, the focus can be directional. Students can write their own game questions, authenticating their learning, reinforcing content acquired knowledge, writing skills, backwards mapping, and problem solving. It can be done in a one computer classroom or in a lab situation. The presenters demonstrate building a game, and playing a game, answering the 'how do i...?' questions that come up.

As part of a grant project, Chester Academy students in grades 3 and 4 worked independently and collaboratively to create electronic audio and digital books with traditional (paper) companion books. The production of the electronic books tapped into varied learning styles and multiple intelligences resulting in increased success in literacy while making books and subjects come alive through the use of technology. When creating our books we integrated technology with social studies, science, language arts, math, music, and art. Although, the grant project focused on third and fourth graders, we have also created electronic books with students in grades 1-8. The use of digital photo and video cameras, MP3 players and recorders, audio and video editing software, green screen and desktop publishing software all sparked interest and ignited a love of reading and learning! This session explores the different types of books that were created, the equipment used, valuable resources we discovered, and tips and tricks that worked for our students and teachers. The process can be as simple as using PowerPoint or another presentation program. For those who are more adventurous, the Ebooks can be created using a video camera and video editing software. We also explore how a green screen can be used with students of all ages!

Elementary classrooms teachers are always teaching. There are no moments in the day that aren't filled to the brim. So how do we find time to make sure students are engaged and technology is part of every student's day? In this session, the presenter shows you ways to integrate technology while also enabling you to have more focused time to teach small groups for guided instruction. Teachers learn about websites that give students time on the computer learning and reinforcing the lessons they participated in with the classroom teacher earlier in the day or week. Students who learn best with a visual activity might be visiting a website presenting in that style. Students who learn best through music, might be going to a website where the lesson is learned through song. For those students who need to be challenged, or timed, or who need immediate feedback, there are hundreds of wonderful sites that can not only help students learn and reinforce those basic skills they need, but also provide a more tiered approach where activities are assigned by student strength, need, style and more. This workshop is intended to show teachers that technology can help us to reach more learners, more often, and more effectively.
