Multimedia content creation on the Web increased at the rate of 3200% last year, and it shows no rate of slowing down. From audiocasts to screencasts to video for the iPod, there are all sorts of ways that students and teachers can take advantage of the easy creation and publishing tools that can bring this rich media to a wide variety of audiences. This session surveys the multimedia landscape, show how schools are already taking advantage of it, and offers some tips on how to get started. |

The presenter has been using the video game Civilization in his class for over ten years. Students in this class build their own culture based on the program Civilization. The students examine and face the problems of war, famine, politics and cultural clashes that have plagued humanity through its existence. They also examine the finer points of society including music, art, law, education, science, anthropology and mythology. The students battle each other over the network for political, military and cultural dominance of the planet. The presenter has also developed other classes for games such as Roller Coaster Tycoon, Sim City and other software. |

How Great Bay e-Learning Charter School Uses Moodle and Moofolio Shawn Bodi, GBECS, and Veronica Brooks, GBECS |

Moodle (open source online course creator) is used by the Great Bay e-Learning Charter School (GBeCS) staff as a means through which students and parents can see what will happen and has happened in class. It is also a means to deliver class content and provide a venue for online discussions. Moofolio is used to document a student's work through their high school career. Moofolio is an electronic portfolio that students use to reflect on their work that is appropriate for the portfolio. Examples of student portfolios will be shown. Moofolio is a block within Moodle that the Seacoast Professional Development Center in Exeter, NH developed. It is free to all schools. |

This session details the proven methods of raising reading among middle and high school students and makes clear the complex and multi-faceted approach to accomplish this goal. The presenter details why middle and high school leaders must focus on literacy skills, how schools can effectively raise student reading achievement by two to three years in one year, and the needed components to install an effective intervention program. Address the needs of your students who are typically "left behind" by other programs by exploring an intervention program that includes: rotational models, adaptive instruction, ongoing reporting and assessment, professional development, and specific supports for English Language Learners and students classified as needing Special Education. This presentation not only invigorates attendees, but also provides them with concrete solutions for engaging their most challenging students. |

This session focuses on how the Senteo interactive response system is designed to enhance interactive teaching and learning. With it, you display or speak prepared or ad hoc questions, students anonymously key in answers with their remote, and responses are tallied, then displayed on a projection screen or interactive whiteboard. Tallying and displaying results occurs immediately. To assess student understanding, you can use a variety of question types, including true or false, multiple choice, numeric response and more-than-one-right-answer. Decimals, fractions and negative numbers can also be incorporated into questions and answers. This presentation introduces Second Life as a platform for both delivering and accessing professional development opportunities. Examples of sites within Second Life with applicable subject content, as well as those that are available to access real-life technology infusion ideas and trainings, are explored. With a fast computer and plenty of bandwidth, teachers can learn how to attend virtual presentations and conferences that are as informative and interactive as those in real life. The session is presented live in Second Life, allowing participants from around the world to attend and interact with those in the real-life McAuliffe Conference audience. Alice is a fun and interactive programming environment designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to create animated movies and simple video games by controlling the behavior of 3D objects and characters in a virtual world. It also forces students to think systematically as they create their virtual worlds. Students love using Alice as it is entirely visual and easy to use. This workshop is for middle and high school teachers of all subjects. After a brief introduction of the Alice Program and how it builds students' higher order thinking skills, participants have hands-on experience with the program. During the hands-on portion, participants gain an understanding of the Alice "object-oriented" programming process, an introduction to building a virtual world, and resources for using it in their classroom. |

Imagine a place where your students can join thousands of others from around the world and participate in an experience that promotes cross-cultural collaboration and learning. Beyond learning about web publishing and mastering the subject matter of their web site, students learn important life skills including teamwork, time management, cross-cultural learning, collaborative problem solving, negotiation, and compromise. Students in three age groups (19 & under, 15 & under, 12 & under) are invited to form teams of 3 to 6 students, supervised by a teacher-coach. Teams have six months to develop a web site on an educational topic of their choice. Every winner receives a host of prizes including an all-expense paid trip to the Think Quest Live Conference in San Francisco where many meet their fellow teammates face-to-face for the very first time. Team building and team management strategies of previous winning coaches are shared. |
