Some examples might be deciphering a snippet from a foreign language and finding a way to translate it or finding media of a landmark to obtain information for a puzzle. There will be a hands on component where participants create their own challenges as well. These tasks can involve almost any sort of online or physical resource and be connected to virtually any content area. The only limit is your imagination. If you think you know all about Breakouts, think again! If you think a Breakout means that you have to turn your whole classroom into an Escape Room: you will be pleasantly surprised at these other avenues. If you are afraid to try Breakouts, then this class is for you. If you already tried them and are looking to take it up a notch, come and discuss! This workshop will cover Breakouts in a differentiated style. After running a 12-week Breakout course for teachers, I learned how teachers of all skill levels can start using Breakout methods in their classrooms. Join us for this fun and collaborative activity to solve a mystery, discover how this technique has been successfully implemented in a high school forensics course, and learn how to create your own activity for the classroom. Utilizing Google Forms and analysing evidence left behind at the scene, attendees will race to piece together clues and complete activities, ultimately solving the mystery. With the popularity of shows like CSI, NCIS, Bones, and Dexter, forensic science is the new "hot topic" high school course. See how technology and Google Forms have been integrated to help students review and apply content knowledge throughout the course. No previous experience with forensic science, Google Forms, or specific grade-level teaching is required to participate in this engaging activity. *  Level: Beginner Grades: 6-8, 9-12	Experience the world of Pecha Kucha, where students and teachers create powerful, precise, practiced presentations which last only six minutes and forty seconds. Creating and delivering these 20 x 20 slideshows (20 slides X 20 seconds each) will build in success by using structures which can be evolved and adapted to fit the needs of the audience. These techniques will transform how you and your students engage with, and share, ideas and information, by starting with a clear design. In over 1000 cities around the world, people use Pecha Kucha to teach each other about their passions with these structured, seven-minute, image-focused presentations. Discuss the challenges of the Hazelwood rule and how working together they have avoided the potential for harsh restrictions that other school newspaper advisors might feel. *  Grades: 9-12	Students from North Reading High School will explain and demonstrate how they used the design thinking process to approach challenges, interpret learning, identify creative opportunities and experiment mindfully to iterate design solutions. This will include the students self-identified process as students worked through to design a "Stair Climbing Robot" and "Designing Games Using The Unity Game Engine". Students will describe the important mechanical and programming principles that moved them in the direction of being able to design and construct their own projects, ie., personalized learning and learning connected to their own interests. How does robotics in the classroom support college and career readiness? This project shows the culmination of an idea that inspired students to create a stair climbing robot. The demands of e-commerce shoppers are pushing retailers to compete for speedier delivery, which is driving up costs to hire drivers and buy and maintain vehicles while creating more traffic on busy city streets. Students are proposing a stair climbing robot which can deliver food, medicine, etc., without taking up space and is environmentally friendly. Also shown will be students using the Unity Game Engine. These students will demonstrate an original video game idea implementation, preparing them with job skills for real world careers.

In fact, Stanford Graduate School of Education found that more than 80% of middle and high school students were unable to distinguish between advertisements and real news stories. This session includes advice from educators, journalists, media literacy experts, and emotional intelligence researchers on how to bring critical media literacy skills to your classroom so students are able to make informed decisions about the media that bombards them every day.

But where do you begin? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and personalized learning can be the perfect match to have every learner realize agency and take ownership to learning. UDL leverages the latest research from the neurosciences in order to create more inclusive learning experiences, but how can we use UDL to empower every learner with the tools and skills to become independent self-directed learners with agency, learners who are future ready for college, career and life?
